At our office, we love seeing happy, healthy smiles—and we know how active kids can be! Whether it’s soccer, basketball, gymnastics, or skateboarding, sports are an amazing way for children to stay fit, learn teamwork, and build confidence. But with all that action comes the risk of injury—especially to the mouth and teeth.
That’s why it’s so important to take steps to protect your child’s smile while they’re on the field, court, or in the rink. Here’s what parents need to know:
1. Mouthguards Are a Must
A properly fitted mouthguard is one of the best ways to protect your child’s teeth from sports-related injuries. Mouthguards cushion the impact to help prevent chipped or broken teeth, cut lips, and even jaw injuries.
Which sports need mouthguards?
Mouthguards are recommended for any contact or high-risk activity, including:
- Football
- Basketball
- Hockey
- Soccer
- Baseball/Softball
- Martial arts
- Gymnastics
- Skateboarding/BMX
Even non-contact sports can result in accidental falls or collisions—so when in doubt, gear up!
2. Choose the Right Mouthguard
There are three main types of mouthguards:
- Stock Mouthguards: Pre-formed and ready to wear, but often don’t fit well.
- Boil-and-Bite Mouthguards: Available at sporting goods stores and offer a better fit after being softened in hot water.
- Custom-Fitted Mouthguards: Made by your child’s dentist for the best protection and comfort.
Tip: Custom mouthguards are especially great for kids with braces!
3. Keep It Clean
Mouthguards go in your child’s mouth, so it’s important to keep them clean!
- Rinse before and after each use.
- Clean regularly with a toothbrush and mild soap.
- Store in a breathable container.
- Replace if it becomes worn, torn, or uncomfortable.
4. Don’t Forget About Head Protection
A properly fitted helmet is also key to protecting not just the head, but the face and mouth too. For activities like biking, football, and hockey, always pair a helmet with a mouthguard.
5. Know What to Do in a Dental Emergency
If your child does get hurt while playing, here’s what to do:
- Chipped/Broken Tooth: Rinse the mouth with warm water and apply a cold compress. Call your dentist right away.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: Try to keep the tooth moist. For baby teeth, call your dentist. For adult teeth, place it in milk or saliva and get to a dentist within 30 minutes.
