Grinding Teeth in Kids: Causes, Signs, and When to Worry

A child rests their hand against their cheek as if their mouth is in pain

If you’ve ever heard your child making a grinding or scraping sound while they sleep, you’re not alone. Teeth grinding, also known as bruxism, is relatively common in children and often happens during sleep. Many children outgrow the habit, but persistent grinding can sometimes lead to tooth damage or discomfort.

What Causes Teeth Grinding in Kids?

There isn’t one single cause of bruxism. Several factors may contribute, including:

  • Stress or emotional changes
  • Teeth that don’t align properly
  • Teething or mouth discomfort
  • Allergies or breathing difficulties during sleep
  • Sleep disorders
  • Certain medications or health conditions

Signs Your Child May Be Grinding Their Teeth

Because teeth grinding often happens during sleep, your child may not realize they’re doing it. Common signs include:

  • Grinding sounds at night
  • Worn, chipped, or damaged teeth
  • Jaw, face, or ear pain
  • Morning headaches
  • Tooth sensitivity or discomfort when chewing

When Should You Worry?

Occasional teeth grinding is usually not a cause for concern. However, it’s a good idea to talk with your child’s dentist if you notice persistent grinding, jaw or facial pain, worn or chipped teeth, or signs that your child isn’t sleeping well.

Grinding combined with symptoms such as loud snoring, pauses in breathing, or frequent nighttime waking may also warrant a conversation with your child’s pediatrician, as these can be signs of a sleep-related breathing disorder.
